Fall 2015 – Week of Welcome

Fall 2015 Journal Club

The Science Literacy Teaching Journal Club invites you to participate in our sixth year of weekly gatherings! The journal club is a cooperative effort of the Teaching Effectiveness Program and the Science Literacy Program. Meetings feature lively, structured discussions across discipline and rank with occasional small-scale teaching experiments. Participants from all disciplines are invited to join the whole series or stop by for a specific conversation.

This year we will focus on approaches for improving specific aspects of students’ science literacy. The topics we will discuss, such as development of critical thinking, assessing reliability of sources, etc., are useful for all students, so please join us!

University of Oregon Named Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science Affiliated University

Following a successful two-day workshop on Science Communication in May 2015, the University of Oregon has been invited to become an affiliated university with the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University.

The UO’s Science Literacy Program will serve as the campus resource center for affiliated programs to provide opportunities for graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and faculty members to build science communication skills. The UO is one of ten institutions affiliated with the Center and the first west of the Mississippi River.

The goal of the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science is to enhance understanding of science by helping train the next generation of scientists and health professionals to communicate more effectively with the public, elected officials, the media, and others outside their own discipline.

Alda, who is best known for playing the character Hawkeye in the television series “M*A*S*H” and hosting “Scientific American Frontiers” on PBS, found that the skills he learned as an actor can also help scientists communicate complicated scientific concepts to novice audiences.

Today, the trainings organized by the center include learning improvisation techniques, discussions about distilling a message and forming a story, and practice media interviews.

In fall 2015 TEP will pilot a University Teaching Certificate Program (UTC) that offers UO graduate students structured and rigorous pathways—at both “core” and “advanced” levels—to develop as college teachers. The certificate program enhances TEP’s teaching development opportunities for GTFs; moreover, it seeks to endorse and help frame excellent teaching development activities already offered by academic departments and other campus units, such as the Graduate SchoolScience Literacy Program, and Center on Diversity and Community.

ASM Science Teaching Fellows
Application deadline November 2, 2015

The ASM Science Teaching Fellows Program is a 5-month development opportunity to help prepare doctoral-trained individuals for science teaching positions at a variety of non-doctoral institutions. Fellows in the program take part in a highly focused training experience that combines in-depth webinars, pre- and post-webinar assignments, structured mentoring, and a community of practice.

NSF-funded REIL Biology Workshops
