3) Solar Challenge – Lane County middle school students participate in end of year event on June 7

Middle school students in Lane County are gearing up for the 2014 Solar Challenge.

The middle school students have been building their solar cars over the past several weeks. In their design, they must consider the following elements:

  • chassis (how to build the frame of the car)
  • wheels and bearings (how to make the wheels turn)
  • power source (how the solar panel and motor work most efficiently)
  • transmission (how to transfer power from the motor to the wheels)
  • body shell (how the shell affects car performance)

Students will test the cars out in class and then decide which cars will move on to the multi-district event. Each classroom can enter one car in each of the following categories:

  • speed car
  • hill climb car
  • art concept car
  • science concept car

Show your support for local K-12 STEM education by cheering on these middle school students at the Solar Challenge event.

Date: Saturday, June 7
Time: 11am until complete (around 3pm)
Location: Cal Young Middle School
2555 Gilham Road Eugene, Oregon 97408
