Science Literacy Program Newsletter – Recruiting for Fall 2014

In this week’s newsletter we are announcing the start of recruiting for Fall Term.

1) SLP Recruiting Graduate Fellows for Fall term
2) SLP Recruiting Undergraduate Scholars for Fall term

1) SLP Recruiting Graduate Fellows for Fall term

Graduate SLP Fellows are directly involved in course development and teaching 100-level science courses for non-science majors with a faculty mentor from one of the participating departments (Biology, Chemistry, Geological Sciences, Human Physiology, or Physics). The program offers outstanding opportunities to develop educational and communication skills by assisting with course development, lecture preparation, lecture presentation, in class demonstrations, assessment development, and office hours. We seek talented, motivated, and hard-working graduate students who would benefit from what our program has to offer, and who perhaps would not otherwise have such opportunities.

Graduate SLP Fellows will have a portion of their FTE paid by the Science Literacy Program, which is funded in part by a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, offers General Education courses for non-science majors designed to improve science literacy of the educated public.

For more information on the benefits and eligibility requirements, see the Graduate Fellows section of our website.

To Apply

  • Complete the online fellow application including short answer questions, an unofficial transcript, one letter of recommendation, and approval from your research advisor and from your department head.
  • Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and we work very hard to pair graduate students with a course and faculty mentor best suited to their strengths.

We are accepting applications for Graduate SLP Fellows in the following courses for Fall 2014.

2) SLP Recruiting Undergraduate Scholars for Fall term

Are you interested in learning about teaching science? The University of Oregon Science Literacy Program offers General Education courses for non-science majors designed to improve science literacy of the educated public. Undergraduate science students are welcome to apply to participate in the program!

Each student selected to be an Undergraduate SLP Scholar will receive an award of $2,500 and the opportunity to participate in designing and/or delivering 100-level science courses for non-science majors. We seek talented, motivated, and hard-working undergraduates who would benefit from what our program has to offer, and who perhaps would not otherwise have such opportunities. Students will be paired with a faculty mentor from the participating departments (Biology, Chemistry, Geological Sciences, Human Physiology, or Physics). The program offers outstanding opportunities to assist with course development, lecture preparation, lecture presentation, and in-class demonstrations. The Undergraduate SLP Scholar positions paid by the Science Literacy Program, which is funded in part by a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
