Center for the Study of Women in Society & Science Literacy Program Open House

The Center for the Study of Women in Society (CSWS) and Science Literacy Program will host a late afternoon “happy hour” open house where people can eat, sip beverages, network, and support each other through community.  This event will be on Thursday, February 16, 2017 from 4:00 – 6:00 PM in the Jane Grant Room (Room 330) in Hendricks Hall.  Please RSVP to csws@uoregon.edu by Wednesday, February 15th so we can make sure to have plenty of bites and beverages on hand.

2017 Northwest Regional Summer Institute on Scientific Teaching

Save the date to attend the Northwest Regional Summer Institute on Scientific Teaching at the University of Oregon,June 20-23, 2017. The Summer Institute will expand and sharpen participants’ teaching skills through workshops facilitated by national science education experts.  Participants will develop original, innovative classroom materials ready for immediate implementation and will be named 2017-18 Summer Institute Education Fellows at the end of the institute. TRUSE Conference 2017

The Transforming Research in Undergraduate STEM Education (TRUSE) Conference 2017 will take place on July 5-9, 2017 at St. Thomas University in St. Paul, MN. The 3rd TRUSE conference will have focus on studies in Biology Education Research, Chemistry Education Research, Research in Undergraduate Mathematics Education, and Physics Education Research at the undergraduate level. The conference will build on the successful formats of the first two TRUSE conferences, featuring plenary speakers from all disciplines, as well as semi-structured working groups, and free time for forming new collaborations. “The Art of Science Communication” Online Course

The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) Public Outreach Committee is proud to offer “The Art of Science Communication”, an online course available for ALL scientists and STEM professionals.  The goal of the course is to provide participants with fundamental training in science communication, focusing in particular on how to present science to a non-expert audience in a formal setting such as a public lecture. Using a combination of video lectures, background material, and virtual mentoring sessions and discussions, the course covers the important components of what makes for a successful presentation, such as messaging, generating interest, and engaging with the audience. Applications are now being accepted for the winter session, and more information can be found on the website.

Ta-Nehisi Coates does not tend to pre-write his keynotes. He talks extemporaneously, forcefully, on the events of the day sometimes, that literal day – and incorporates themes from his writing. Lately, his focus is on the systemic racism that is inseparable from the growth of the nation: the racist policies that have plundered black bodies, black property, and black lives for economic and social gain. How can we reconcile these acts, many of them ongoing, with the supposedly post-racial country some claim we are moving towards? Other related topics include the distressing series of murders of unarmed black people that has rocked the country and dominated headlines. Coates does not offer a casual “snapshot,” does not provide easy answers, and does not dole out false hope. He engages audiences in a meaningful, historically-grounded, up-to-the-minute discussion on what it means to talk – really talk – about race today.

Imagining America: Community-Engaged Teaching and Learning at UOWeek 4: Wed, Feb. 1

Join us to discuss the vital role of community-engaged teaching and learning in our courses and curriculum. This session builds on one hosted by the Office of the Provost and Academic Affairs last spring: that session inspired a series of recommendations by a facilitator from Imagining America about how to better support community-engaged teaching, which is important both for enhancing student learning and realizing the public mission of the university. In addition to reviewing the status of these recommendations and related campus developments, we’ll consider as teachers the best practices and possibilities for community-engaged teaching and learning as they relate to our own courses. We hope, too, that this session will be a way to boost the visibility and strengthen connections among faculty engaged in this compelling, urgent, and labor-intensive teaching. Online Course Design: Where Do I Begin?Week 5: Wed, Feb. 8

What does it mean to teach online? Are you planning to teach a fully online course, or redesign a current course to include online units? In this session you will be introduced to various methods for articulating and achieving your class goals in an online environment. We will explore actual online course designs, and you will be able to hear from current faculty teaching online about their experiences. This will be the first of an ongoing series of TEP sessions focused on online course design. You’re welcome to join us if you’re exploring the option of online teaching and want to find out more.

Student, peer and self-evaluations are influential components in gauging faculty teaching effectiveness. In this workshop, participants will consider the role of each teaching evaluation component in faculty reviews, discuss potential sources of bias in teaching evaluations, and learn how to assess contributions to equity and inclusion in faculty teaching.  This workshop is led by the Center on Diversity and Community and co-sponsored by the Office of the Provost and Academic Affairs, the Teaching Engagement Program, and the Center for Multicultural Academic Excellence.
